Mind Machine

Multi Format, Color, Silent, Loop, Thomas Scheffer, VG Bild-Kunst 2025

This work can be interpreted as a subversive statement, as it allows the viewer to play with their

own mind. Eye and head movements while viewing create a “glitch” moment in the brain.

Scheffer's works are part of a visual investigation that deals with perceptual gaps, states of

consciousness, and the interface between human cognition and artificial intelligence.

His body of works MIND MACHINE uses AI-based processes not only as a tool, but also as a

mirror and disruptive impulse: thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns become algorithmically

generated fragments that throw the human coordinate system into disarray. The pictorial space

created by digital filters drawings, logic modules, and AI processes generates a kind of visual

“dizziness” - a form of epistemic disorientation in which classical notions of knowledge, subject,

and control are suspended. „RECOGNISE THAT HUMANS ARE THE LAST MILE OF RUNTIME.“

Regardless of what analog or digital systems you use to massage your glitch, it still ultimately has

to 'run' on human wetware. Could you develop a system or make a work of art that causes human

wetware itself to glitch?" Yes, that’s MIND MACHINE!
